The head of the Free Patriotic Movement, MP Gebran Bassil, headed a delegation that included MPs Nada Al-Bustani, Cesar Abi Khalil, Nicolas Al-Sahnawi, the movement’s vice president for administrative affairs, Ghassan Khoury, and the President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, as part of a tour of a number of references carrying the “movement’s” proposal under the title “Protecting Lebanon.”
Bassil said after his meeting with President Aoun, "We are conducting this tour of the references because we sense the great danger from inside and outside, and we are presenting a proposal under the title of protecting Lebanon."
He explained, "The paper includes that there be an internal code of conduct among some of us, rejecting violence, rejecting incitement in the media and politics, rejecting self-security, and adhering to the state's ceiling, especially on the issue of displacement, so that there is no problem with the state being the incubator and sponsor and committing to one Lebanon, 10,452 square kilometers."
Bassil pointed out that the second idea in the proposal is the situations that we must all reject as Lebanese, and stresses the rejection of strife, the Israeli occupation, and Syrian intervention.
He added: “The third idea is the solution. In our opinion, this solution, which we as Lebanese must agree on, is the exclusiveness of weapons and the decision is in the hands of the army and the state, with a complete withdrawal of Israel from Lebanon, and secondly, protecting Lebanon by neutralizing it and through a national defense strategy to which the government has committed, and thirdly, a just peace that occurs in the hands of the opponents and enemies, and has its conditions that Lebanon’s full rights be achieved in it.”
Bassil concluded by saying: "This is an attempt by us to put everyone on the path of talking among ourselves and not internal fighting. This is a great responsibility that the President of the Republic is taking care of. We have said from day one that we are on the side of the Presidency of the Republic and the President of the Republic, even if we are in the opposition, then we are on the side of the state and legitimacy. We do not accept that what happened to us will happen to the President of the Republic, and for this reason he is the signatory and the guarantor."
